Man-in-the-Middle Attack

An attack where a third party secretly intercepts and possibly alters communication between two parties who believe they're communicating directly.

MITM attacks are why encrypted, authenticated connections (like HTTPS) matter — without them, intercepted traffic can be read or modified without either party knowing.
